Brittney Griner adds to WNBA broadcast debate that left fans seething

On Friday, Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner criticised the WNBA for failing to highlight rookies Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.  

The WNBA's preseason action began Friday with a clash between Reese and Cardoso's Chicago Sky and the Minnesota Lynx, but the game was not broadcast locally or on the WNBA's League Pass.  

"It's wild they didn't have this game on League Pass!" Griner captioned an Instagram story.  

But they did what they wanted! It makes no sense not to include these [two] young females' games on the app!"  

Griner, a towering 6'9 figure, shined in the WNBA almost immediately after joining the league in 2013, garnering an All-Star selection as a rookie  

Defensive Player of the Year honours the next two seasons, and averaging more than 20 points per game from 2017 to 2019.  

After a terrible nine-month arrest by Russian authorities, Griner has utilised her prominence to advocate for other detainees, LGBTQ+ rights, and the advancement of women's basketball.  

"There's a lot of buzz,” Griner said about the state of women's basketball in April. “We definitely have to use that momentum.
